I hope this helps.It seems to me that Apple could create a solution to this if they wanted, but they do not want to. I don't have any USB 3.1 ports on my Mac. The problem is that it's got a Thunderbolt 3 (USB) male connector. I tried the exact same thing hoping it would work: Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter plugged into a Thunderbolt 3 external hard drive, then connecting the adapter to my iMac's Thunderbolt 2 port via a male-to-male Thunderbolt 2 cable. There was a driver issue with the hard drive, and I had to install some manufacturer's software. The Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) end is male, the Thunderbolt 2 end is female.
