The 27-inch iMac's display is simply wonderful to work with, but, boy, does it take up a lot of desktop real estate.The iMac's design limits the type of upgrades an owner can perform, at least after purchase. New backlight inverter board = 50 bucks.Not worth it in my opinion, 2011 27” also commonly have graphics cards failure so it wouldn’t really last long even if you got the dim screen issue resolved. I’m an ACMT (Apple Certified Macintosh Technician) and if you would like a Mac I would totally suggest buying that. The 21.5-inch iMacs are offered with a 2.5 GHz or 2.7 GHz i5 processor; a 2.8 GHz i7 is available as a build-to-order option. I had already replaced the HD with an SSD and the superdrive for a second HD, maxed out on the RAM, but when I saw a good deal for the 27" I jumped on it.

As for reliability, I would imagine they are still relatively reliable today (depending on how they have been treated/ what they have been used for). I found out that a family member of mine has an old 27" iMac from 2011 with a broken glass screen and backlight. The 2011 iMacs offer four SO-DIMM memory slots, two of which are populated with 2 GB RAM modules in the default configuration. 2012 had both of them.
The difference in speed and screen is remarkable.
