THE VINCENTIAN journeyed to Union Island last December to share in the commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of the Union Island Uprising. again well Done feeling proud This was due in great measure to the intervention of private citizens who, according to a source on Union Island, brought and manned pumps and hoses in the herculean effort to control the blaze.Understandably so, Union Island, a closely knit Southern Grenadines community, was plunged into deep mourning.Those sources also informed that it was Alexander who first alerted the gas station staff to the extraordinary stench of fuel. A gas station in Clifton exploded sometime between 6.30 pm – 6.45 pm on the evening of Tuesday 19th May 2020, Clifton is known as the main business center on Union Island. According to investigations, about 6:40 p.m. on 19.05.2020 the Union Island Fire Station was alerted about an explosion at Freddy’s Gas Station located at Clifton, Union Island. Meanwhile, government has accepted an offer by Grenada to help with the supply of fuel to Union Island after fire destroyed the sole petrol station there. Carriacou is located just 8 miles south of Union Island, and like the rest of the tri-island state, borders were closed on 23 March 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Union Island mourns for three fire victims Seventy-two-year-old Freddy Naert, owner of the UniGas Station and former owner of Big Sands Hotel, and 12-year-old student Lindini Neverson, two of three persons who sustained severe burns about their bodies following a fiery explosion at UniGas Station, Union Island, Tuesday 19th May, died on Sunday 24th May at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital. These will be examined in an article to be published in next week’s issue of THE VINCENIAN.Meanwhile, Union Island based Radio Grenadines reported that at least one other building in the vicinity, a wooden structure used by the Roots Connection Culture Club, was completely destroyed.One resident, in describing the atmosphere that seemed to have weighed even more intensely with the news of ‘Zara’s’ passing, said, "You can hear crying all over through the valleys.”The fire is said to have started around 6:40pm and was, according to a Royal SVG Police Force release, brought under control by 11pm.Sources on the Southern Grenadine island told THE VINCENTIAN that "the incident happened while the gas truck – which is owned by the gas station – was being used to transfer fuel to the tanks on the compound.” Alexander and Neverson were students of the Union Island Secondary School. However, it also recognises that due process must be followed.
